INTRODUCTION TO THE RESOURCE

To help introduce you to the lesson plans we have included a link to a Powerpoint presentation narrated by the Executive Director of the Critical Thinking Consortium, Usha James, who will help to provide you with a walk through of the lessons themselves.

How to Raise a Reader https://www.indigoloveofreading.org/how-to-raise-a-reader/ Mon, 21 Jan 2019 20:44:10 +0000 https://www.indigoloveofreading.org/?p=713 Read more]]> Helping your child learn to read is not only a joyful, connecting experience, but is also incredibly important in inspiring their lifelong love of reading.

When you raise a reader, that love of reading helps develop and strengthen their literacy skills—critical for educational success—beyond reading comprehension, including stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention.

Here at the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, we want to share tips for how to help your child along their reading journey.

Is your child between the ages of 2 to 4?

You may notice that your child’s attention span is getting longer and they are following storylines. Now is a good time to introduce stories that deal with emotions. Here are some more reading tips:

Who doesn’t love reading a book with a rhyme? It is helpful for learning and is such a fun time!

Not only will it help your child with understanding the content of the story, but it also is a great way to build bonds over the books you are reading together.

You never know when a good reading moment will pop up! Keep a book handy for some impromptu reading that will also encourage your child to be an anytime reader.

Getting your child involved in the activity is an important part to building their confidence towards reading.

Here are some great titles to check out that touch on emotional themes.

Be sure to check back at loveofreading.org as we share more reading tips and resources. Thanks to our friends at Indigo Books & Music for providing some of these great ideas!
